Here are some of the most notable adaptations announced in December 2021.
– Universal Pictures, Harvey Mason Media, and Get Lifted Film Company (John Legend) are making a new Phantom of the Opera film, based on a spec script by John Fusco. This version will be set in the nightlife scene of modern day New Orleans. The original novel was written by Gaston Leroux and published in 1909/1910 as a serial.
– Oakhusrt Entertaiment has optioned Katherine Center’s novel Things You Save in a Fire, which was published in 2019 by St. Martin’s Press.
– Exile Content and AP Productions is moving forward with The Coup about an attempted insurrection against Venezuelan Presdient Nicolas Maduro. It will be written by C.C. Kilpatrick and based on a series of articles by AP correspondent Joshua Goodman.
– Sony has tapped Alejandro Brugués to write/direct the adaptation to Gabino Iglesias’s upcoming novel The Devil Takes You Home. Mulholland Books will publish in August.
– Alcon Entertaiment and Revelations Entertainment have acquired the rights to Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous With Rama. Gollancz and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich originally published the novel in 1973.
– Luminosity Entertainment, Altit Media Group, and K.JAM Media have acquired J.V. Kade’s novel Bot Wars. Alexander Kiesl and Steffen Hacker will direct. The YA novel was published in 2013 by Dial Books for Young Readers.
– Noble Story Co. is producing an adaptation of Andy Andrews’ novel The Heart Mender: A Story of Second Chances. Thomas Nelson republished in 2010.
– MiMO Studio and Trustbridge Global Media have optioned Brittany Geragotelis’ The Infamous Frankie Lorde novels. The YA series includes Stealing Greenwich and Going Wild, with a third book due out this upcoming September. The first, Stealing Greenwich, was published in 2020 by Pixel+Ink.
– Bazelevs Productions (Timur Bekmambetov), ZQ Entertainment, and POW! Entertainment are making two movies based on Stan Lee comics from the 40s and 50s. First on the list: Carnival of Killers will be written by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer. Matt Greenberg will write the second, Sawbones.
