Here are some of the most notable adaptations announced in April 2021.
– EveryWhere Studios, JuVee Productions (Viola Davis’s company), and Rockhill Studios have tapped Julie Lynch to script the adaptation of the memoir Girls Like Us: Fighting for a World Where Girls Are Not for Sale, written by Rachel Llyod. Harper originally published in 2011.
– Emily V. Gordon will write the adaptation for The Doubtful Guest for Amblin Partners and Double Dream. Kumail Nanjiani is set to executive produce and star. The short illustrated book was written by Edward Gorey and first published by Doubleday in 1957.
– Picture Perfect Federation, Black Label Media, and Marsh Productions & Entertainment have optioned Sarah Lotz’s upcoming novel Impossible. Penguin Group Berkley Books will publish in 2022.
– Pilot Wave and Atlas Entertainment have picked up Catriona Silvey’s novel Meet Me in Another Life. Gal Gadot will star and produce. William Morrow published the book last month.
– Media Rights Capital and Per Capita Productions acquired Nicholas Sparks’s last novel The Return. Grand Central published last September.
– Universal Pictures and Working Title Films are moving forward with their adaptation/reboot of The Borrowers from the novels by Mary Norton. Patrick Burleigh will script the adaptation. Conrad Vernon in talks to direct. The first in the series was published by J. M. Dent in 1952.
– Disney will adapt The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, the 2005 Broadway musical with a book from Rachel Sheinkin and music and lyrics by William Finn.
– Universal Pictures and Chris Morgan Productions have tapped Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to adapt Brian Freeman’s novel Infinite. Thomas & Mercer published last March.
– Fuqua Films (Antoine Fuqua) and Front Row Productions will produce a new adaptation of Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Fuqua will direct, and the film will be based on a 2008 all-Black Broadway revival of the play.
– Universal Pictures will adapt Fletcher Knebel’s 1965 novel Night of Camp David. Jed Mercurio will script; Paul Greengrass will direct and produce. Harper & Row originally published.
– Mike and James Flanagan will script an adaptation of The Season of Passage for Universal and Intrepid Pictures. Flanagan will also direct and produce. The 1993 novel, written by Christopher Pike, was first published by Tor Books.
– Recent Oscar winner Florian Zeller will adapt his and Christopher Hampton’s stage play The Son. Zeller will also produce and direct. Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern will star.
– The Kennedy/Marshall Company acquired Jane Smiley’s Perestroika in Paris. Barry Sonnenfeld will direct the animated film. Knopf published the novel last December.
